The phone call begins with the cries of an anguished child calling for a parent: “Mama! Papa!” The youngster’s sobs are quickly replaced by a husky male voice that means business.
“We’ve got your child,” he says in rapid-fire Spanish, usually adding an expletive for effect and then rattling off a list of demands that might include cash or jewels dropped off at a certain street corner or a sizable deposit made to a local bank.

This in spite of government efforts to scale down violence through deployment of 36,000 troops within the country. However, one thing that could turn the tide is public frustration. Recent march by nearly a 100,000 Mexicans throughout the country registers a strong protest against the protracted epidemic of violent killings, kidnappings and shootouts. At least it would pressurize the government to strengthen crime fighting efforts. Ordinary Mexicans cant move around freely without of being robbed, looted or even killed. Mexico needs to discipline its faltering police force. It is notoriously famous for its alliances with the drug gangs and extorting money. The authorities... Congressman Speaks On Borders, Crime & Aid to Local Sheriffs Congressman Ted Poe (R-TX) speaks on the inadequacy of efforts to secure the U.S.-Mexico border. Poe mentions that the U.S. Border Patrol does as good a job as they are allowed to, but their agents can only apprehend illegal aliens within a 25 mile corridor from the border. Any illegal alien who manages to get 26+ miles from the border is outside the enforcement area for the U.S. Border Patrol, at which point local sheriffs are charged with dealing with them. Sheriff Departments are woefully under-funded, and are outspent and outgunned by the cartels moving illegal drugs across the border and into the United States.
