Melting Arctic Sea Ice
Sea ice is frozen seawater floating on the surface of the ocean. Some sea ice is semi-permanent, persisting from year to year, and some is seasonal, melting and refreezing from season to season. The sea ice cover reaches its minimum extent at the end of each summer and the remaining ice is called the perennial ice cover. The 2007 Arctic summer sea ice has reached the lowest extent of perennial ice cover on record - nearly 25% less than the previous low set in 2005.

Arctic 2002: Breathtaking Under-Ice Diving Photography
Breathtaking. . .that's the best way Jeremy Stewart, the Arctic Expedition Dive supervisor, found to describe his experiences diving under the ice in the frigid Arctic waters. The flexibility of the Department of Fisheries, Oceans Canada and National Geographic divers proved essential for the Sea Ice Ecological component of the expedition. Divers performed a variety of tasks including video transects, water sampling, and organisms collection. These images of the divers were collected by the Global Explorer ROV from Deep Sea Systems, Inc.
The difference between ice morphology at the sea surface and under the water is particularly impressive. Though ice is relatively flat at the sea surface, this footage from the ROV shows how ice thickness underwater can change drastically from a few...

Will Arctic ice melt spark cold war?-France 24 EN
On TOPSTORY today: The EU has warned that climate change could trigger a dangerous fight for the vast mineral resources of the Arctic. A rise in global temperature could release large deposits of gas and oil and exacerbate tensions between Norway and Russia.

Arctic Sea Ice loss 1979 to 2007
This animation compares the 2005 annual Arctic minimum sea ice from 09/21/2005 (shown in orange) with the 2007 minimum sea ice from 09/14/2007. The average minimum sea ice from 1979 through 2007 is shown in green.

Arctic Ice Grows, Refuses To Conform With Liberal Meme
Just a few weeks ago, predictions of Arctic ice collapse were buzzing all over the internet. Some scientists were predicting that the "North Pole may be ice-free for first time this summer". Others predicted that the entire "polar ice cap would disappear this summer".
The Arctic melt season is nearly done for this year. The sun is now very low above the horizon and will set for the winter at the North Pole in five weeks. And none of these dire predictions have come to pass. Yet there is, however, something odd going on with the ice data.
The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) in Boulder, Colorado released an alarming graph on August 11, showing that Arctic ice was rapidly disappearing, back towards last year's record minimum. Their data shows Arctic sea ice extent only 10 per cent...

The Arctic Ice Melt for 2008
Last year in 2007, the Arctic had the lowest concentration of sea ice that was ever recorded. This year, the melt was not quite as extreme, but still well below the normal levels.

Arctic Ice melting from Global Warming
Video from NSDIC (National Snow and Ice Data Center) showing the age of the Arctic sea ice from 1982 to 2007. You can see that the ice greater than 5 years old (in red) has mostly been replaced by much younger ice (in blue).
Most of the ice in the western or Pacific end of the Arctic has melted this year (2007)

Could Arctic ice cause world war?
The Arctic may become a major battle ground for nations trying to obtain a share of its vast natural reserves, according to a written report for a two-day EU summit in Brussels. The U.S. and Russia top the list of those vying for the area, rich in oil and gas.

Will Steger: We Lost 50% of the Arctic Ice Last Summer
Jun 17, 2008. After returning from an arctic expedition on Ellesmere Island, Will Steger was on-hand at the DECC to share his experience.
Steger's findings indicate that humans are walking on "thin ice" when it comes to taking action against climate change.
"We need to start taking action," said Steger, polar explorer and educator.
"In the arctic, we lost 50% of the ice last summer and that is not like a sea level rise, but we're losing 50% of what was once a reflective area," said Steger.
Despite the incredible findings, Steger says huge chunks of ice clogged arctic waterways and prevented him from getting to his final destination.
Steger says this was the result of global warming.
"We went up these large straights and sounds - hundreds of miles, they were almost 700 miles these...
