Weapons From China Bound for Zimbabwe Rejected
ANCHOR:
The The U.S. State Department has announced it is discouraged China from sending arms to Zimbabwe. The US has also asked Zimbabwe's
neighbors not to allow the ship loaded with weapons to dock.
STORY: Zambia, which chairs the Southern African Development Community grouping, has urged African countries to bar the An Yue Jiang from entering their waters. It says the weapons could deepen Zimbabwe's election crisis.
[Tom Casey State Department Spokesman]:
"Right now clearly is not the time that we would want to see anyone putting additional weapons or additional materiel into the system when the situation is so unsettled and when we have seen real and visible instances of abuses committed by the security forces."
Zimbabwe on Sunday announced a delay in a partial recount of votes...

Chinese weapons for Zimbabwe
The ship of shame with weapons for the Zimbabwan dictator Mugabe has been blocked in South Africa and Angola.
As protests intensified across southern Africa against the delivery of a shipment of Chinese-made arms to Zimbabwe, the Chinese government said Tuesday that the ship carrying the arms — owned by a large state-owned company, COSCO — may return to China because of problems delivering the goods.
South Africa's High Court Friday barred transport of the ammunition, rockets and mortar bombs across South Africa from the port of Durban to landlocked Zimbabwe after an Anglican archbishop argued they were likely to be used to crush the Zimbabwean opposition following a disputed Mar. 29 election.
South Africa's dock workers also said through their union they would refuse to unload...

China in Africa - Zimbabwe
Part 4 in the series.
Apart from Sudan, China's relationship with Zimbabwe is perhaps it's most controversial in Africa.
China has sold and continues to sell all kinds of weapons to Zimbabwe.
Since Mugabe's controversial land reforms in 2000, Zimbabwe's economic output and foreign currency earnings have plummeted while unemployment and inflation have risen to astronomical levels and millions of Zimbabweans have fled the country.
Yet while Zimbabweans leave their country, Chinese move in. Chinese merchants, labourers and even soldiers are now a presence in Zimbabwean cities.
China has won a contract to farm land seized from white commercial farm owners. Chinese companies are rebuilding Zimbabwe's national rail network, providing buses and trains, received contracts to build coal...

Frost over the World - Zimbabwe - 05 April 08
Knox Chitiyo of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) joins Sir David to discuss the situation.
Chitiyo says that if a run-off were to occur, Morgan Tsvangirai would be firm favourite to win by a decisive margin.
However, Chitiyo says if Tsvangirai is elected there will be an enormous sense of expectation that will be hard to fulfill.
Also, James Miles, the China correspondent for The Economist, joins Sir David to discuss the tensions.
Miles was one of the few journalists in Tibet when the violence began.
He says the scale of the violence was unprecedented in China.
He also says that despite the justified grievances of ethnic Tibetans, without the Chinese, economic growth in the region would be seriously hindered.

Clear Conscience vs Silent Trade
China is one of our biggest trading partners, but many goods come from labor camps. Prisoners of conscience, while still alive are even harvested of their vital organs for profit under the Communist regime (helpstoporganharvesting.org.au). This year our government boycotted our cricket team from going to Zimbabwe because of human rights abuses there. When it comes to China, major trade may be on the line, but cruel regimes never last... Can our newly elected government look long term and act nobly?

Zimbabwe - END OF GAME
The world and its words have failed us.
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Russia and China vetoed on Friday a Western-backed U.N. Security Council resolution to impose sanctions on Zimbabwe for holding a violent presidential poll that was boycotted by the opposition candidate.
The resolution would have imposed an arms embargo on the southern African country and financial and travel restrictions on President Robert Mugabe and 13 other officials, and called for a U.N. special envoy for Zimbabwe to be appointed.
Nine countries voted for the U.S.-drafted text, five -- including veto-holding Russia and China -- opposed it and one abstained in the 15-nation council.
The result marked a failure by the Western bloc to induce Russia and China to at least abstain because of the gravity of the crisis...

Path to Freedom - Water Wise Gardening
February 2007 - Urban eco-pioneer, Anais Dervaes, demonstrates an ancient & efficient method of irrigation using ollas (unglazed clay pots) which are gradually making a comeback in our water challenged world.
The principle behind the olla is that unglazed terracotta is porous, and when buried in the ground will slowly seep moisture to the surrounding soil and spread via capillary action. Any plants nearby have access to a steady stream of water. Apparently ollas have been used by the Spanish for centuries and were brought to the arid American south-west by the colonisers. The system also developed independently in China, Zimbabwe, Iran and Pakistan, and the Romans were known to irrigate their grape vines using this method.
Ollas (pronounced OH-yas) virtually eliminate the runoff and...

Zimbabwe: Help Chinese Communist Party
Once Africa's breadbasket, now its Africa's basket case because its 83 year old dictator Robert Mugabe has destroyed the country. There's no eggs, no bread, no butter, no milk, no meat, no wheat, not even the mealie meal that corn porridge they eat. Got nothing. 1/2 of Zimbabwe's population is malnourished. Starvation threatens millions. Mugabe downsized the army because he can't feed the troops. the social welfare office doesn't have paper to type up a hospital referral. hospitals don't even have basic intravenous fluids.
Zimbabwe's life expectancy in 1990, 60 years old, today it's 37, lowest in the world. In the capital, Harare, the drinking water is siphoned from a sewer system so people are suffering from dysentery and cholera. AIDS is rampant. A doctor in Bulawayo, the country's...
