Russia-Venezuela axis uses energy as weapon

Posted by Matt in July 21st, 2008

A Russian-Venezuelan axis is a 21st-century throwback to the Cold war Soviet-Cuban alliance. Such a partnership bodes ill for energy security, for freedom in both nations, and for the Western Hemisphere.

Despite differences in culture, language, and geography, the rulers of Russia and Venezuela are increasingly rejecting civil society and narrowing political space in their respective countries. They drive out foreign investors and erode market mechanisms. Both governments have mounted sustained attacks on the rule of law in an effort to exert control over energy resources, excessively strengthen the state, and expand geopolitical clout. Putin and Chávez are promoting an alternative vision to that of the U.S. and the West and are comfortable with the progress they are making toward this end.

Energy Security Pt 1
With the cost of oil soaring, high gasoline prices have become a prominent issue in this year's presidential election in the United States. But the impact of rising energy prices affects far more than just domestic U.S. politics. The influence of oil- and gas-producing nations, such as Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Venezuela, is growing regionally and even globally as they become wealthier. And nations dependent on foreign-energy supplies to fuel rapid development, such as China, are devoting much of their diplomatic efforts to securing future sources of oil. How are rising energy prices affecting the world's economic balance of power? And what will the geopolitical fallout be of nations' efforts to gain energy security?

MR BUSH, YOU ARE A DONKEY, A COWARD, AN ASSASIN, A GENOCIST
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has asked Russia to align itself with the Venezuela as protection from the United States. The call came as Chavez met his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev on energy matters. Russia and Venezuela have agreed to bilateral cooperation on energy, with Russia being allowed to explore new oil and gas territory in Venezuela's Orinoco basin. Mr Chavez has said cooperation on oil projects will be essential to Venezuela's economy. On military cooperation he said: 'We'll also keep working and making progress in military technology to equip Venezuela's defence to guarantee Venezuelan sovereignty, which is threatened by the empire of the United States.

Davos Open Forum 2007 - Managing Access to Oil
Managing Access to Oil: The Risk of the 21st Century Access to and the increased need for oil and gas are hot topics in international relations, and sources of conflict and war. Whereas importing countries, such as the US and China, aim to ensure long-term access to this non-renewable source of energy, exporting countries, such as Venezuela or Russia, use their privileged access to oil as an instrument to promote their political interests. 1) Will this need lead to further conflicts in view of the military strengths of such importing countries as China and India? Are power and strength moving towards Asia? 2) Considering its wealth in primary energy sources, how will Russia position itself in times of oil and gas shortages? 3) How is the foreign policy of other countries, in Western...

The perspective this writer displays is incredible. It is almost impossible to come to grips with the bald faced hypocracy displayed in this paragraph….read this slowly..it is a direct quote that could in another context be applied to the US and Great Britain.
Quote: “Both governments have mounted sustained attacks on the rule of law in an effort to exert control over energy resources, excessively strengthen the state, and expand geopolitical clout”…
This writer is talking about Russia and Venezuela..the owners of those energy resources in question. The damned owners for God’s sake. They have a right to exert control over those resources…after all they own them.
It is the US and Great Britain that have flouted the rule of law in invading and conquering another country on trumped up LIES to gain control of its energy resources. It is the US and Great Britain that seek to expand their “geopolitical clout”.
The countries of Russia and Venezuela have every right to do what ever the hell they want with their oil and gas. The United States would not let any other country try to tell it what to do with all its coal.
It is way past time for the United States to face one unalterable fact….other countries have a right to do what is in their own best interests with their own property independent of the wishes of some corrupt American administration such as we have now.

I consider it rather cowardly everytime America is beat at the geopolitical chess game the first thing it’s apologist cry about is what is wrong with those who beat us. The Russians abandoned the arms race of the cold war and developed their natural resources, now dominating all of European and Eastern markets with enough left-over weapons to ensure parity with any American military threat.
Now, countries all over the world are joining the New Russian power not in an arms race or military confrontation, but a new energy and technological axis which demands our leadership to make radical institutional change.
We, must learn for the first time in our history perhaps that you can not kill your way into Democracy, but you must over time learn to earn a place at the world table by being humble and hardworking like everybody else.

There many science and engineering stories being developed about acheiving to a level of Type 1 Civilization status over time and with a refocusing of our political and domestic priorities. Currently we are said to be an 0.7 Type Civilization were we are 98% dependent on fossil fuels of oil and gas to operate our economies as a world of nations.
We must acheive total environmental control over many sources of energy that are plentiful and abundant within our world or die as a modern world incapable of bridging the gap between total resource development.
Where is the leadership and vision that will give the US total energy innovation and independence?
