A Smarter Way to Fight

Posted by Matt in July 22nd, 2008

He was the brains behind ‘Charlie Wilson’s War.’ Now his tactics are hot, from Pakistan to Colombia.

Strange things are happening in the jungles of Colombia. After years of fighting a fierce, conventional war against the leftist guerrilla group known as the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the country’s military accomplished a major feat earlier this month without firing a shot. The Colombians used a complex ruse to free 15 hostages, including three Americans and former presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, eliciting international acclaim and comparisons to the Israeli hostage rescue at Entebbe. But what happened afterward—which hasn’t been widely reported—was almost as remarkable, according to Colombian Vice Defense Minister Juan Carlos Pinzón.

1/2 Sen. John Kerry: A New Approach to Fighting Terrorism @ Center for American Progress, Washington, DC 7/31/2008 Official event video available at: http://www.americanprogressaction.org... Five years after Donald Rumsfeld asked whether we are capturing and killing more terrorists than we are creating, the answer remains deeply uncertain and troubling. Global terrorist attacks are near historic highs, and this month Secretary Gates acknowledged that we cannot capture and kill our way to victory over the terrorists. We need a new approach to this fight, one that emphasizes stopping the breeding of future terrorists as much as eliminating the current ones. Drawing on insights from his recent trips to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Middle East, Senator John Kerry (D-MA) will discuss a...

Consequences of Training Terrorists --SOA
http://memosphere.wordpress.com/ron-paul-on-blowback-and-diplomacy/ Excerpt from LinkTV The School of the Americas (SOA), in 2001 renamed the "Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation," is a combat training school for Latin American soldiers, located at Fort Benning, Georgia. Initially established in Panama in 1946, it was kicked out of that country in 1984 under the terms of the Panama Canal Treaty. Former Panamanian President, Jorge Illueca, stated that the School of the Americas was the "biggest base for destabilization in Latin America." The SOA, frequently dubbed the "School of Assassins," has left a trail of blood and suffering in every country where its graduates have returned. Over its 59 years, the SOA has trained over 60,000 Latin American soldiers in...

Col Snider: U.S. Military a Bureaucracy Not a Profession 3
In Part 3, Colonel Snider explains that a profession is there to serve society's needs doing tasks it cannot just do-it-yourself (DIY) and then blasts the alleged U.S. military "professional strategic leaders"--the Colonels and the Generals--for not being ready to perform counter-insurgency operations in Iraq as the American people naively expected them to be able to do. http://www.combatreform.com/johnpaulvann.htm The U.S. military bureaucracy is not a profession but a group of power-hungry racketeers bent on expanding their budgets and ego--not students of warfare and innovators for military excellence. ANY military man who speaks out against this bureaucratic racket at any time is most welcome and needed-- and Snider's cynical calculations over timing maintaining a vain appearance...

McCain 100 Years in Iraq 1/3/2008
E.H.: I want to say at the outset I'm not going to be voting for you. I'm going to be voting in the Democratic primary in order to defeat the senator from new york, who I refer to as a Joe Lieberman Democrat. I have listened to Hillary Clinton say probably a hundred times that she will end the war and I've heard you say we can't leave Iraq. In both cases I think the devil's in the details. I looked at your Web site; I read everything on your web site today and I couldn't find any answers to my questions. What I would like to know is, I've heard you say a million times all the reasons why we can't leave Iraq. But I've never heard you say what it is you hope to accomplish in Iraq and how long it's going to take. Mr. McCain: Yes, sir, and thank you for coming tonight and thank...

http://www.c-spanarchives.org/library/vidLink.php?b=1222997963&e=1222998317&n=002 MS. IFILL: You both have sons who are in Iraq or on their way to Iraq. You, Governor Palin, have said that you would like to see a real clear plan for an exit strategy. What should that be, governor? GOV. PALIN: I am very thankful that we do have a good plan. And the surge and the counterinsurgency strategy in Iraq that has proven to work, I am thankful that that is part of the plan implemented under a great American hero, General Petraeus, and pushed hard by another great American, Senator John McCain. I know that the other ticket opposed this surge, in fact, even opposed funding for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Barack Obama voted against funding troops there after promising that he would not do...

Iraq - Five Years After the Invasion - VOA Story
The US military had little difficulty toppling Saddam Hussein's regime in 2003. Yet the post-invasion challenges in Iraq — promoting democracy, rebuilding infrastructure, providing security, beating back an anti-American insurgency and defusing the Sunni-Shiite conflict — have tested the limits of the armed forces. Almost any civilian would be impressed by the daily lunch formation at West Point, the nation's most elite training college for Army officers. Seemingly endless lines of officer cadets — dressed in the charcoal gray uniforms that have been traditional at West Point for much of its 206-year history — march to their oaken dining hall. But the counter-insurgency war cadets are being trained to wage in Iraq differs in crucial ways from conventional wars fought by...

John McCain on Iraq
Sen. John McCain makes a statement about the Iraq War, and how his stance will affect the voters. This interview took place on October 12, 2007, at Iowa Public Television. http://www.iptv.org/campaign08 Yepsen: Senator, you talk a lot about the war in Iraq in your campaign. It's pretty unpopular. What should the country be doing? McCain: I hope the country would be doing what they're doing now, David. Thanks to General Petraeus, whose performance before congress and the American people -- Americans are frustrated and angry and they're saddened by the sacrifice that has been made. It was mismanaged for nearly four years, and now we have a strategy that is I believe is succeeding -- I know is succeeding. The question is whether the political and other aspects of a successful...

Beating The Taliban By The Book - Afghanistan
August 2008 Can America really beat the Taliban using a textbook? We take a look at the practice behind the theory, as Charlie Company attempt to follow the instructions laid out in the Counterinsurgency Field Manual. Seen as "a modern military textbook for winning hearts and minds and outwitting the enemy" the book also known as the COIN Manual, was written by some of America's finest military minds. So can the Americans really win by the book? The Manual states: "Counterinsurgents often achieve the most meaningful success in garnering public support...with activities that do not include killing insurgents". Yet for all the activities that exclude killing, this is a war. The American troops are at their best when under attack and the other side of war is reveling in the death of your...

John McCain: Rally 12/27/07
John McCain Rally Cedar Rapids, IA 12/27/07 TRANSCRIPT: QUESTIONER: " . . . I just spent 16 months in Iraq and . . . I understand that a counterinsurgency takes between 10 and 13 years to accomplish something. Our nation doesn't have the heart or the patience to last 10 or 13 years. What are you going to do next year, sir, to encourage our nation and to stress to them the importance of what's happening in that region of the world?" JOHN MCCAIN: " . . . I need to impress upon them the importance of it, what the Iranians are doing, look at what's happening in Pakistan . . . if I could respectfully say to you, in 10-13 years is for complete success. 10 to 13 years means everything's fine and we're gone. I believe that if we can make the same progress in the next seven or eight months that...

Iraq Debate: Reuel Marc Gerecht opening remarks
Reuel Marc Gerecht, former Middle East expert for the CIA and Resident Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, gives the second opening statement in favor of the resolution. Mr. Gerecht criticizes former U.S. military commanders for seeking a "light footprint" in Iraq which led to internal strife and increased division among Iraqis. Al Qaida in Iraq is a major force and must be defeated. They would see U.S. withdrawal and defeat as a major victory for their cause. Mr. Gerecht also focuses on Iran's efforts to radicalize Shiite elements in Iraq. But there is reason for hope now that Gen. Petraeus has a counterinsurgency strategy. The U.S. will be in Iraq for a long time and Mr. Gerecht argues that that's a good thing.

Lioness movie trailer
Lioness tells the story of a group of female Army support soldiers who became the first women in American history to be sent into direct ground combat in violation of official policy. Without sufficient training but with a commitment to serve as needed, these young women ended up fighting in some of the bloodiest counterinsurgency battles of the Iraq war. Lioness makes public, for the first time, this hidden history. Told through intimate accounts, journal excerpts, archival footage, as well as interviews with military commanders, the film follows five Lioness women who served together for a year in Iraq. With captivating detail, this probing documentary reveals the unexpected consequences that began by using these Army women to defuse tensions with local civilians, but resulted in...

John McCain: Town Hall Meeting 07/15/08
John McCain Town Hall Meeting Albuquerque, NM 07/15/08 TRANSCRIPT JOHN MCCAIN: A successful counterinsurgency requires more than military force. It requires all instruments of our national power, and that military and civilian leaders work together, at all levels, under a joint plan. Too often in Afghanistan this is not happening. And we need to build the same kind of civil-military partnership that Gen. Petraeus and Amb. Crocker have forged in Iraq, supported by the best talent in the U.S. government and the resources necessary to prevail. Unity of command is also a principle I will bring to Washington. Too often, even as American soldiers and diplomats cooperate in the field, their superiors back home have been squabbling. Last year, the Bush administration appointed a war czar,...
