Russia anounces ‘spheres of interest’

Posted by Matt in August 31st, 2008

Russia’s president Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday announced Moscow’s intention to preserve geographical spheres “of privileged interest” on or near its borders as part of a five point foreign policy statement in a television interview.

The announcement, in the wake of the recent conflict in Georgia, is likely to raise the political temperature in neighbouring states, especially those with significant Russian minorities, as they try to gauge Russia’s appetite for future conflicts in the region.

Exclusive: Palin On Foreign Policy Katie Couric Interviews The Candidate About Watching Russia, Her New Passport, And Her Opinion Of Obama Katie Couric: As we stand before this august building and institution, what do you see as the role of the United States in the world? Sarah Palin: I see the United States as being a force for good in the world. And as Ronald Reagan used to talk about, America being the beacon of light and hope for those who are seeking democratic values and tolerance and freedom. I see our country being able to represent those things that can be looked to as that leadership, that light needed across the world. Couric: In preparing for this conversation, a lot of our viewers and Internet users wanted to know why you did not get a passport until last year. And...

Sarah Palin Discusses Russia With Katie Couric
Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin defended her comment that the proximity of Russia to her home state of Alaska gives her foreign policy experience, explaining in a CBS interview aired Thursday that "we have trade missions back and forth." Palin, the 44-year-old Alaska governor, has never visited Russia and had never traveled outside North America until last year. She also had never met a foreign leader until her trip this week to New York. In the interview, she did not offer any examples of being involved in any negotiations with Russia. Palin's foreign policy experience came up when she gave her first major interview, on Sept. 11 to ABC News. Asked what insight she had gained from living so close to Russia, she said: "They're our next-door neighbors and you can actually...

Alaska near Russia = foreign policy experience?
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — When presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain introduced Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate last Friday, the Arizona senator emphasized her role as the commander in chief of the Alaska National Guard. Later, when questions were raised about Palin's lack of experience in national and international affairs, the McCain campaign pointed again to her military command experience as governor. Some reporters have tried to follow up. "Can you tell me one decision that she made as commander in chief of the Alaska National Guard?" CNN journalist Campbell Brown asked Monday while interviewing McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds. "Just one?" Bounds couldn't, because Palin has never personally ordered the state guard to do anything. Instead,...

Russia prefers peaceful foreign policy
Russia will always put diplomacy first as a way of protecting its interests, though it will not exclude other means if necessary, said President Medvedev when awarding state honours to Russian troops for the bravery they displayed during the recent conflict in South Ossetia.

Lithodid-Man on Palin foreign policy
How they really screwed the pooch using the 'proximity to Russia' argument to boost Sarah's foreign policy experience. I again apologize for the sound quality, it is my equipment. Also- I was incorrect about the closest point of Alaska to Russia - it is in the Bering Straits and is Big Diomede Island (R) and Little Diomede Island (US) and are three miles apart. Still does not invalidate my point at all.

How do you see the relationship with Russia? Do you see them as a competitor? Do you see them as an enemy? Do you see them as a potential partner? SEN. Foreign Policy - Russia and Israel
During his campaign, Senator Obama has not had time to study foreign affairs. He has been busy running for president. I have no reason to believe that his knowledge should have deepened to any degree in the last two years, and this is born out by these clips. While his television advertisements of late have used the word 'erratic' to describe Senator McCain, in the latter's case, it only applies to his campaigning. Senator McCain is not a strong campaigner. He can be a strong leader. Senator Obama seems to be the reverse. His campaign has been solid. It is in the area of leadership, and response to crises, that he has demonstrated erraticism, hesitancy and weak judgment.
