Football: 4th-Down Strategies

Posted by Matt in September 15th, 2008

It’s 4th-down and 2 yards to go for a touchdown. Should you go for it or kick? A kick is almost a sure thing, but what about going for it? If one does a little homework, then they will find that the odds of success are 43 percent if a team decides to go for it. That doesn’t look promising. But is that the end of the story?

It turns out that kicking in a situation that I just described will decrease the chance of a team winning the game by 3 percent. Huh? How is that possible?

Just looking at odds of success for this one play is not enough. For example, if they decide to go for a touchdown, but don’t make it then look at where the opponent must start playing. They’ll be inside the 5-yard line, which is a whole lot worse field position than if the team had kicked a field goal.

The problem should be framed this way: Kick a field goal and give your opponent better field position or go for it and give your opponent lousy field position if you fail.

According to a study, when a team has the ball on its own half of the field, they should never kick the ball if there are less than 4 yards to go.

No-punt coach and why

Football maverick. Numbers nut. Super successful. Persuasive. Fascinating.

Meet Kevin Kelley, the head football coach at Pulaski Academy, and an ardent advocate of NOT punting the football. Backed by studies from Harvard and Cal-Berkeley, his stat-backed pitch put the waffle in an old reporter weaned on Frank Broyles, Darrell Royal and other trumpeters of punting and field position.

That philosophy, ingrained over the years, is a mountain for Kelley to climb. Suppose, he said, that could be erased, that fans were raised on the notion that a team had four downs to make a first down and that failure hands the ball to the opposition.

“The first time we kicked the ball to the other team, they’d be booing, thinking, ‘Why are you giving up the ball,’” he said. “‘You didn’t make them work for it; you’re just giving it to them.’”

His team is simply trying to use all four downs provided by the rules.

DO FIRMS MAXIMIZE? EVIDENCE FROM PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL

This paper examines a single, narrow decision—the choice on fourth down in the National Football League between kicking and trying for a first down—as a case study of the standard view that competition in the goods, capital, and labor markets leads firms to make maximizing choices. Play-by-play data and dynamic programming are used to estimate the average payoffs to kicking and trying for a first down under different circumstances. Examination of teams’ actual decisions shows systematic, clear-cut, and overwhelmingly statistically significant departures from the decisions that would maximize teams’ chances of winning. Possible reasons for the departures are considered.

QB spikes ball on 4th down. High school football
Social Circle QB spikes ball to stop clock but it is 4th down and they lose by 1 point. Felt bad for the kid. He played a great game. I'd say it was more the coaches fault for running up the middle with no timeouts left on third down. Great game anyway.

2007 LSU Football: Top 10 Plays of the Year
Counting down the 10 best plays from the craziest, most exciting year ever of LSU football. BCS Champs!!! Thank you Les Miles. For those wondering why there are no plays from the Florida game: there really isn't a single play that stands out the way any of these 10 do; the collection of all the 4th down conversions, etc. was crazy good, but not any one in particular

Pinckney Pirates Jr. Football (Black Squad) Comeback
In 2005, the Pinckney Pirates Jr. Football Black squad made a incredible comeback against an undefeated Howell squad who outscored their opponents 227-6 before this game. The game was 0-0 until the 4th quarter when Howell scored with about 4 minutes left in the game on a 4th and 25 down. Neither team did well moving the ball all day. With less than two minutes in the game, the smallest team in the conference did something no one expected.....they made a comeback. It was 4th down and 12 yards for a first down. We used a play we never ran before so it could not be scouted called "conehead". We called it conehead because I could signal it in without taking a timeout by making a cone over my head so the defense could not prepare for it. Experience the joy these kids have after they...

Rushing Heroes: Konami Football Arcade NFL - Part 1
This is part 1 of the Konami football game Rushing Heroes. The system is the same as Run and Gun 2/Slam Dunk 2. This is the first time I played this game, just sad. This game has some very competitive modes. 1st Down - Means you have 4 downs to make 10 yards 2nd Down - 3 downs to make 10 yards 3rd Down - 2 downs to make 10 yards 4th Down - You only have 1 down to make 10 yards, if not you lose the ball. Pretty interesting to be able to play the game with an automatic 4th down every time. I'll upload my vid of this later, I think I wanna practice first. I don't want to post another video of me getting murdered.

Ohio State hammered on 4th Down
With 11 minutes left in the 4th quarter, Ohio State goes for it on 4th and 7. LSU pounds Todd Boeckman forcing him to fumble and securing the national championship for the Louisiana State Tigers. Sorry about the muted parts, dont know what my camera did. Overall, the national championship wasn't that exciting, but I thought this highlight was pretty decent. Not the best, but still pretty good. (Not an OSU or LSU fan by any means)

EMU beats Ohio on fourth down with :03 left
For the second straight game, Eastern Michigan pulled out a dramatic victory with a last-second touchdown. This time it was a 2-yard run on fourth down by fullback Julius Anderson (#37) with three seconds remaining to beat Ohio 26-23 on Oct. 22, 2011 in B-Dawg's NCAA '08 dyNASTY. This video begins with EMU defensive end Pat McCall (#91) sackins Ohio quarterback Patrick Mullins (#17) for a safety with 51 seconds left in the first quarter. Speedy EMU quarterback Wallace Stone (#18) runs 54 yards for a touchdown to put Eastern up 12-3 with 3:18 left in the second quarter. McCall imposes himself on the Bobcats again by upending Ohio tight end Travis Paul (#85) to separate him from a pass. Greg White (#4) of EMU spins off a tackle on a 12-yard TD run that put the Hurons up 19-10 with 7:32 left...
