How the global economic crisis could bring down the Chinese government

A breakdown in the entire Chinese political order might mean that going to war wouldn’t be such a bad thing. Historically, China has re-focused attention by going to war with its neighbors. Taiwan may be in their sights this time, or another war option may present itself.

This unrest (As USA Today reported) is likely to spiral. As the Chinese economy sours for the first time in years, the government this week announced a $586 billion stimulus package. But in some ways, much more is at stake: While, in the U.S., a financial failure would simply mean another dent in George W. Bush’s reputation, in China it could mean the breakdown of the entire political order.

China defies global economy trend
World Bank figures have given China a double-digit growth in the last quarter of 2009 – 10.7 per cent to be precise – which puts it on course to overtake Japan as the second-largest economy in the world, after the US. Mansoor Dailami, the manager of international finance in the World Bank’s development economics branch, told Al Jazeera: “China’s economy has been growing very rapidly since the end of the recession. “But the problem is that the country has a huge population with significant diversity between different regions but they still have a long way to go to catch up with the more advanced countries.” Dailami said: “Basically, 2010 is going to be a year of economic recovery compared to 2009 yet there are some concerns in regards to the pace and dynamism of this recovery and what it…

Has China began economic warfare?
New evidence show that Japan has replaced China as the top holder of American debt. Chinas military has called for the government to punish the US because of a potential meeting with the Dalai Lama. China’s holding of US Treasury bonds has tumbled, according to US Treasury data released Tuesday, after Beijing expressed concern over the swelling US deficit and amid new US-China tensions.

Chossudovsky: China could already be world’s largest economy

World economy banks on China – 24 October 2008
