US Navy Monitors North Korean Ship
In our top story today, the US Navy is monitoring a North Korean ship now at sea. Officials did not say what the vessel was suspected of carrying. But the Navy is monitoring the ship under new UN sanctions meant to block North Korea from exporting weapons. The US says its navy is monitoring a North Korean vessel at sea under new UN sanctions barring Pyongyang from exporting weapons, including missile parts and nuclear materials. US officials said the ship, called Kang Nam, became “a subject of interest” after leaving a North Korean port on Wednesday. They declined to say what the ship — now in international waters — might be carrying. Kang Nam is the first ship to be monitored under the UN sanctions adopted last week after Pyongyang raised tensions by test-firing missiles, restarting a…

North Korea Threatens Military Action and to Weaponise its Plutonium
North Korea on Saturday threatened “resolute military action” if the United States tried to isolate it after the UN Security Council imposed widened sanctions against the reclusive communist state for a nuclear test in May. They vowed to start a program to enrich uranium and to “weaponize” plutonium at its nuclear weapons plant, the North’s official news agency KCNA quoted its foreign ministry spokesman as saying. The report said Pyongyang would consider any attempt by US or its allies to impose a “blockade” as an “act of war.”

But the reclusive communist state hit back today with more provocations of its own. Pyongyang said it would start its enrichment program turning all of its plutonium into weapon grade in the wake of fresh sanctions by the United Nations. North Korea Now a Serious Threat to South
WONG: North Korea says it has deployed new missiles to hit more parts of Asia and has improved its ability to attack the South. Heres more. STORY: The communist North could also test-fire its longest-range missile by the end of this month. The missiles may be designed to strike US territory. But the missile tests have never met with much success. South Korea’s defense ministry says the North has deployed a new mid-range missile. It can travel up to 3000 kilometers to hit Japan, and threaten US military bases in Guam. [Shin Won-shik, S. Korean Defense Ministry]: “We wrote North Korea’s threats such as its conventional mid-range missile deployed for combat in the paper based on actual facts. Compared to the past, we expressed North Korea as a serious and direct threat so that our people can…

North Korea Defies Calls for Denuclearization
North Koreas announcement that it is in the final stages of enriching uranium could give it a second path to building a nuclear weapon. The international community has yet to convince the reclusive communist state to give up its nuclear weapons program which is seen as a major threat to North Asian stability. South Korea’s government says that what the North is doing is regrettable. [Moon Tae-young, South Korean Foreign Ministry]: “It cannot be tolerated that North Korea disclaimed the international community’s decisive will for denuclearization of North Korea and regional peace and stability in Northeast Asia. We will closely cooperate with related countries to urge North Korea to abolish its nuclear weapons program and return to six party talks as soon as possible for denuclearization…

The Secret Syrian nuclear reactor (Hebrew/English)
“N. Koreans Tapes at Syrian Reactor,” Robin Wright, Washington Post, April 24 See: www.washingtonpost.com US intelligence officials concluded that a secret Syrian nuclear reactor was expected to make fuel for nuclear weapons and was within weeks or months of being fully operational when it was destroyed in September by an Israeli air strike, officials said today. “The reactor would have been capable of producing plutonium for nuclear weapons, was not configured to produce electricity and was ill suited for research,” concluded an intelligence document released today. The assessments released to reporters followed similar briefings to members of Congress today about photographs taken inside the secret Syrian facility. US officials said the photographs had convinced the Israeli government…

North Korea to Restart Nuclear Arms Plant
North Korea says that talks to end its nuclear weapons program is “useless” and they plan to restart its plant that makes plutonium. The comments come in response to the UN Security Council on Monday unanimously condemning North Korea’s long-range rocket launch nearly two weeks ago. They say the move is against international law and are calling for increased sanctions on the state. North Korea’s foreign ministry issued its statement through the state controlled news media. “There would be no need to hold six-party talks which the DPRK has attended.” North Korea began dismantling its Soviet-era nuclear plant more than a year ago as part of a disarmament-for-aid deal it reached with China, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the United States. But experts say the North could have its plant…

North Korea’s Ballistic Bid?
Tensions flare in East Asia as North Korea is set to launch a long-range rocket later this week.
