Russia and Iran get strategic

Posted by Matt in January 29th, 2009

Looking at the developments of the past 90 days through the filter of the new Russian security framework, a clearer picture emerges. It’s no longer a question for the United States of whether or not Russia will support additional sanctions on Iran. That won’t happen. Russia is on the path to make Iran a strategic partner, a counter to the United States in the regions of rivalry.

The United States falls into a trap in assuming that Russia doesn’t want a nuclear-armed Iran. Russian officials repeat over and over that they have no evidence that Iran has a weapons program. US officials discount that statement but shouldn’t. The United States needs to remember that Russia has nuclear engineers inside Iran working with the Iranians.

Tarpley: Iran nuclear swap deal a defeat for US policy of isolation
Iran’s deal to ship its’ uranium to Turkey, while insisting on continuing to enrich nuclear fuel, is getting a mixed response globally. Russia’s giving it a guarded welcome, but the US and Britain are far from convinced. They’re continuing to push the UN into more sanctions against Tehran. The sticking point for the United States is Iran’s insistance to carry on enriching its own uranium. But US investigative journalist Webster Tarpley says the deal means his country’s strategy to isolate Tehran has failed.

Iran closer to Nuclear weapons?
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced that his country will begin the production of highly enriched uranium for its medical reactor. At present Iran has been enriching uranium only to 3.5 percent, the level needed for use in its Bushehr nuclear power plant. The Tehran medical reactor will require 20 percent enriched uranium, a significant increase but still well short of the levels needed for weapons.

‘Iran’s uranium a problem for UN, not the world’
Iran’s first nuclear power plant is now powering up in the southern city of Bushehr under the strict control of the UN’s atomic watchdog. That’s amid international concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The fact that Iran is starting its own nuclear facility has drawn enormous attention from foreign countries. Seyed Mohammad Morandi, a professor of politics at Tehran University, believes that it is only the UN which has issues with Iran — not the whole international community.

‘Sanctions laughable – Iran won’t drop nuclear plans’
The UN Security Council has approved new financial and arms controls on Iran by a strong majority vote. The new sanctions are described as the toughest yet, with the aim of pushing Tehran to halt its controversial nuclear programme. But the Iranian President immediately dismissed the resolution as a ‘used handkerchief’.

Could Iran go nuclear with Russian help?
Russia is set to launch Iran’s nuclear power plant in Bushehr next week. The US and Israel remain in strong opposition to the nuclear plant. Will this spark a military strike on Iran? Former CIA analyst Ray McGovern and RT contributor Wayne Madsen both say no. McGovern does believe an attack by Israel is possible sooner than later, but this shift will only be a small factor in the bigger picture. Madsen argues that US opposition sends the wrong message, both on US-Russia relations and Middle East affairs.

Inside Story – Iran nuclear deal – 25 Oct 09
Iran has delayed its response to an IAEA-sponsored deal to ship most of its nuclear fuel to Russia for further processing. At the same time a group of the agency’s inspectors are in Iran to examine the country’s second nuclear plant which is under construction. Is Iran sending confusing messages to the international community? And what are the implications if it rejects the proposal?

Iran has started up its first nuclear power plant, built by Russia in the southern city of Bushehr. Engineers from both countries are now loading fuel into the reactor under the strict control of the UN’s atomic watchdog. Russia’s ready to launch Iran’s first nuclear power plant on Saturday, saying the joint project will show that Tehran is entitled to the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The Russian-built reactor will be loaded with fuel under the strict control of the UN’s nuclear watchdog. The plant is expected to be fully operational in about a month. NIE Iran Nuclear Report: Bush Press Conference – Part 1/2
President George Bush speaks at a press conference about the findings of the National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) Report on Iranian Nuclear Capabilities. NIE Report: Inventing Facts Many have been quick to characterize yesterday’s National Intelligence Estimate report [1] on Iran’s nuclear program as a long overdue “Honest Intel” [2] that will suck the air out of warmongers’ sails because it clearly states “with high confidence that in fall of 2003, Tehran halted its nuclear weapons program”. Forgive this writer for being a spoiler, but haven’t report after report issued by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the many years since repeatedly confirmed non-existence of such nuclear weapons program in Iran? For those who have not read this latest 9-page NIE report, it begins…
