Posted by Matt in March 19th, 2009

The global economic meltdown has the World Bank on high alert.

As the financial crisis deepens, the World Bank is issuing even bleaker warnings about rising poverty and hunger in the developing world.  Initially, it estimated that 46 million people in developing countries could be pushed into poverty.  Now, that level is up another 7 million.

Haiti Food Crisis
June 2008 Haiti is facing a major food crisis as riots break out in the capital Port-au-Prince. Five people have died, the Prime Minister was forced to resign and authorities fear the worst is yet to come! All produce, even eggs, are imported here, leaving Haiti at the hands of the global market. Although blessed with fertile land, farmers have no machinery and are forced to use their hands. A farmer says “we cannot compete with other farmers who have the technology to back them”. People are even eating mud cookies to relieve hunger. The Haitian government have turned to International crisis funds for immediate food relief but what will happen in the long run?

GURAVAL VILLAGE, Madhya Pradesh, India, 9 June 2008 — Despite a robust economy with 9 per cent annual growth in recent years, inflation and the food crisis in India now threaten to erode many of the gains made here. Crop Stop: Food crisis fears as heat hits wheat
A quarter of Russia’s grain crops have been destroyed by the unprecedented heatwave and wildfires. The government is planning to spend more than a billion US dollars to help producers. It’s also imposed a ban on wheat exports to avoid a surge in domestic grain prices, which is expected to be lifted in October. But this has already caused a global wheat price spike.

I am angronomist with vast experience in agricutural economics and animal productions and health as my course and practical experiece proof this in-2004/2005 as a labour representative in Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria. We are able to feed over 20,000 inhabitant/ neighbouring people with meager amount of money. Though it was a research farm comprising of Poultry unit, Snailery, piggery, rabbitry, cattle, sheep and goat, fishery, cassava, melon, maize and leguminous plant to serve as organic manure. Besides all arable crops were planted. The overall turn over was 300% of the capital for that year. Well food shortage arises when our government leaves agrarian sector for oil sector which has life span interms of reserve ratio. I have a comprehensive proposal on how to reduce food crisis though it will require discipline. Swine flu now the rate of spread is more higher than that of the bird flu though both are caused by the same partogen. What is the way forward when people cannot rear poultry birds and pigs because of this zoonotic disease. Well there is local treatment for it though as not been officially tested. It ia non poisonous weed + their feeds.Because of job scarcity i leave my area of specialisation to multinational company:cotecna destination inpection! Till next time.Bye.
