How to Dodge the Draft in Russia

According to his paperwork, “Dmitri” spent several weeks in a psychiatric institution in the Arkhangelsk region in northern Russia and, soon after, he was finally diagnosed with a mild mental illness. He won’t say what the diagnosis actually is; the important thing for him is that the general finding is stamped across his identification papers. It prevents him from ever getting a job in the Russian government. But more importantly for Dmitri, that medical certification prevents him from being drafted into the army.

	Coming soon. Russia is hell for many young men. I watched a documentary last night which featured a few young Russian men. Some of them were in the army, others cadets at the naval academy. Their stories are horrifying, some more than others. In Russia young men are drafted into military service. There’s no way out of it. This has opened the door to unimaginable human rights violations. It’s a crisis that needs to be addressed. If Americans can show compassion and pour their hearts out to the people of Haiti then certainly we can help change life in Russia for the better and stop these young men from suffering such horrible physical and psychological torment.
