Israel is trying to convince the Obama Administration that Iran poses some existential threat to Israel. Well it does.
But not in the way the Israeli government is trying to portray that threat. Israel would like everyone to believe that the Mad Mullahs of Iran would start a nuclear exchange with Israel as soon as they get the "bomb". That is absurd nonsense and everyone with an IQ above a cabbage knows it. The Iranians are not stupid people nor is their government. Iran is more of a democracy than Israel will ever be.
The real Iranian threat to Israel is economic.
If Iran does develop "the bomb", and there's not a shred of evidence they are doing so, then Israel's nuclear arsenal would be instantly useless as a means of intimidating the Muslim countries surrounding it...Arab and Persian. When and if that happens economic life in Israel will change forever and not in Israel's favor. Already there is increasisng immigration by Jews out of Israel. Investment in Israel would not look so promising...in fact it would look more promising in Iran since Iran has all that oil and gas. So the real threat to Israel is that a prosperous powerful Iran would cause Israel to wither and die on the vine, so to speak.
Iran has 70 million citizens, a strategic location and enormous natural wealth in energy resources. It does not need to have a war with Israel...all it needs is to realize its potential. Its very existence with all these attributes is a kind of threat to anyone who wants to be its enemy. Israel is desperate to prevent Iran from realizing its destiny and that is not going to work. So, Israel had better start making accomodation with its Muslim neighbors in a big hurry. As soon as the World recognizes that Iran is more important to the World economy, then Israel will be in truly grave danger. But the danger will not come from being attacked with nukes.
It will be economic.
If Israel is going to succeed in the long term it is going to have to come to a peaceful accomodation with the Palestinians. There is simply no other way. Unending war is not the way to live either for Israelis or Palestinians. Israel should return to the '67 borders, make real peace with the Palestinians and assist them in establishing a viable nation of their own...either that or incorporate them as citizens of Israel with all the rights of citizenship.
