Insight: Azerbaijan eyes aiding Israel against Iran | Reuters

Azerbaijan, the oil-rich ex-Soviet republic on Iran’s far northern border, has, say local sources with knowledge of its military policy, explored with Israel how Azeri air bases and spy drones might help Israeli jets pull off a long-range attack.

That is a far cry from the massive firepower and diplomatic cover that Netanyahu wants from Washington. But, by addressing key weaknesses in any Israeli war plan – notably on refueling, reconnaissance and rescuing crews – such an alliance might tilt Israeli thinking on the feasibility of acting without U.S. help.

Israel finance minister says Iran economy “on verge of collapse” – chicagotribune.com

Iran’s economy is edging towards collapse due to international sanctions over its controversial nuclear program, Israeli Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said on Sunday.

Israel regards the prospect of its arch enemy developing nuclear weapons as a threat to its existence, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that, although sanctions are taking their toll, they are not yet forcing Iran to abandon work that could soon lead to a nuclear warhead.

However, Israeli officials appear increasingly ready to acknowledge the effect of recent American and European sanctions designed to restrict Iran’s lifeline oil exports.

Clarion Fund Warns of Possible Nuclear Attack on U.S. by Iran – Video

America is a relatively safe place. However, a regime halfway around the world could destroy our way of life.

From the beginning, the current Iranian regime made it clear that America is public enemy #1. One way to seriously damage America would be a nuke, and one terrifying scenario is a nuclear bomb detonated at high altitude. This is an issue that Congressional commissions and others have investigated, and concluded that it is a credible threat. This would cause severe damage or catastrophic destruction to the electric grid across America.

In this day and age, everything ultimately depends on electric power: communications, transportation, banking, finance, food and water. The result of such an attach would mean that within a short amount of time, it will be nearly impossible to get food and water, pump gas, provide medical care, withdraw money or use cellular phones. Moreover, without electricity, nuclear power plants melt down. If their containment buildings are breeched, the areas around them could become uninhabitable for centuries. Anarchy. Starvation. Disease.

As long as the current Iranian regime is in power, we are NOT SAFE..

Trident submarine missiles review to suggest ‘stepping down nuclear ladder’ | UK news | The Guardian

The government’s review of the future of the Trident submarine nuclear missile system is likely to suggest a significant downgrading of the UK’s nuclear deterrent, including the possibility of locking the warheads “in a cupboard” for delayed launch only after several weeks of mounting international tension.

The revelation was made by Sir Nick Harvey, the Liberal Democrat who was the defence minister leading the review until the government reshuffle this month. The MP for North Devon said he believed the policy could get support in Whitehall and from senior military figures and Labour.

Who said anything about mounting tension? Why can’t there be a nuclear Pearl Harbor? And even if there is tension, is the other side going to sit there while you get your nuclear weapons ready?

Big U.S. Fleet Nears Disputed Islands, But What For? | U.S. | TIME.com

It’s probably just a coincidence; no need to worry yet. But the U.S. has quietly assembled a powerful air, land and sea armada not far from where Japan and China are squaring off over disputed islands in the East China Sea.

Two Navy aircraft carrier battle groups and a Marine Corps air-ground task force have begun operating in the Western Pacific, within easy reach of the Senkaku Islands. That’s where Japanese and Chinese patrol boats are engaged in an increasingly tense standoff.

Northeast India: The country’s next hot spot or the world’s next flashpoint?

India’s Northeast is pitching itself as the country’s next tourism hot spot. But tensions fueled by Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar and China could make it the world’s next flashpoint.

Writing for India’s Outlook magazine, Lintner notes that Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar and China have all stirred up trouble in India’s Northeast by providing arms and safe haven to rebel groups. And he sees signals that the trouble isn’t over, following this summer’s violent conflict in Assam between Bodo tribals and Bengali-speaking Muslims (accused of being illegal immigrants).

As he puts it:

“The Kashmir conflict in India’s northwest may attract more attention from the outside world, but the conflict in the northeast is no less vicious, …

Ominous signs from the north

There has always been the so-called North Korean factor or risk in major economic and political moments in South Korea. The upcoming presidential election seems to be no exception.

President Lee Myung-bak held an emergency national security meeting at Cheong Wa Dae Wednesday to discuss two issues: the repeated, possibly intended, crossing of the maritime demarcation line by North Korean fishing vessels in the West Sea, and no announcement of major economic reform in the communist regime’s annual parliamentary session.

We hope the frequent violations of the northern limit line (NLL) by North Korean fishermen are just for maximizing blue crab catches during the peak season, and the failure to come up with bold changes in the socialist economic system reflects their insufficient preparation.

If the two moves are correlated and aimed at confusing and influencing the South in its election season, however, Pyongyang is gravely mistaken.
