What makes America such an indispensable power is precisely what makes anti-Americanism inevitable
It amuses me that some of those who criticise the present US Administration for its Manichaeism - its division of the world into good and evil - themselves allocate all past badness to Bush and all prospective goodness to Obama. As the ever-improving [...]

EXCLUSIVE: A former Soviet spymaster writes for the Sunday Herald
THE?LATE?ALEXANDER LITVINENKO once spoke to?me?about?Putin’s strategic plan for damaging Western democracy and reducing it to the level of what passes for democracy in Russia. I believe that this plan is already being successfully accomplished. For proof, just look at how all Western leaders are today happy [...]

Exit of 110 gravity bombs ends 54-year presence. Change happened secretly over years, say scientists.
The US has removed its nuclear weapons from Britain, ending a contentious presence spanning more than half a century, a report will say today. According to the study by the Federation of American Scientists, the last 110 American nuclear weapons on [...]

As the economic mood darkens, Britain’s wealth generators are moving abroad. So where exactly is everybody heading, asks Terry Kirby
The exodus is accelerating faster than house prices are falling. Refusing to risk their livelihoods on our spluttering financial situation, or have their spirits crushed by fear of rising crime, a new swath of high-flyers, [...]

This is a fictional account of what could have happened.
The rapid advance of the German army through Belgium and France in May 1940 left hundreds of thousands of British, French and Belgian troops encircled at the port of Dunkirk in northern France.
But then Hitler ordered a halt to the attack. This gave the British [...]

Despite some eerie parallels between the position of the United States today and that of the British Empire a century ago, there are key differences. Britain’s decline was driven by bad economics. The United States, in contrast, has the strength and dynamism to continue shaping the world — but only if it can overcome its [...]

We are too concerned with multiculturalism and political correctness to combat the threat of Islamism effectively.
After spending time recently with senior Pentagon officials and other Americans involved in counter-terror-ism, I was struck by the global scope of their concerns. Above all I was reminded how different their attitudes are from those of their British counterparts, [...]

Iran’s actions mean war. The United States and Europe should put an army together and go to war against Iran. Although, I do NOT believe this will happen. We can’t do it all ourselves, and Britain along with the rest of Europe will not help in this regard.
The bottom line is that Iran will continue [...]

The world is in a state of flux. China is growing rapidly, but is very unstable. Russia has been doing much better economically in the last few years, but there are storm clouds on the horizon. Russia oil output looks like it may start to decline shortly. The Russian military machine is decaying faster than [...]

Never mind the radiation: British contingency planners worried there would be a dramatic shortage of tea in the aftermath of a nuclear attack, recently declassified documents showed Monday.
The shortfall of the staple British beverage would be “very serious” if the country were to come under attack with atomic and hydrogen bombs, said according to a [...]

That the news is familiar makes it no less alarming: 1.1 billion people, about one-sixth of the world’s population, lack access to safe drinking water. Fifteen British sailors and Marines were seized by Iran in internationally disputed waters and not in Iraq’s maritime territory as Parliament was told, according to new official documents released to The Times.
The Britons were seized because the US-led coalition designated a sea boundary for Iran’s territorial waters without telling the Iranians where it was, internal [...]

Most global surveys on image spotlight negative views of the U.S. But a new poll of U.S. perceptions of Britain shows a plunge. Since it’s the U.K.’s turn under this microscope, we’ll venture some reasons.
But from a BBC World Service poll of 1,000 Americans, it’s clear U.S. views of Britain have fallen sharply. The BBC [...]

So why is this cold-eyed machine politician so eager to portray himself as a ruthless tyrant?
The answer is that Russia is run by thugs — whether KGB or mobsters with guns — who respect brute force. Opposition, in business or politics, is simply eliminated. Stalin was in a league of his own, slaughtering millions of [...]
