Is another October surprise likely in Russia in the coming years?

Tuesday week marks the 24th anniversary of the three-day October Revolt in Moscow in 1993 that signaled the beginning of the end of President Boris Yeltsin’s democratic reforms. On Nov. 7, Russia will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Revolution of 1917 that replaced tsarist rule with communism.

Both revolts were precipitated by events similar to what is now occurring in Russia. Since 2011, a dissident faction of young Russians who have been raised under a Vladimir Putin/Dmitry Medvedev government has grown, fueled by an increasingly autocratic and corrupt regime and an economic downturn caused by economic sanctions imposed by the U.S., Canada and the European Community.
