Here you will find article links that I’ve found most interesting. As I post articles, occasionally there’s an article I find especially important. Those are the ones I will be posting here.

China preparing for nuclear war

Posted by Matt in May 10th, 2008 Edit

Defense analysts for the British intelligence service MI6 believe China is preparing for the “eventuality of a nuclear war.” The conclusion follows evidence that Beijing has built secretly a major naval base deep inside caverns which even sophisticated satellites cannot penetrate, says a report in Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin.

In an unusual development, the analysts have provided details to the specialist defense periodical, Jane’s Intelligence Review, which published satellite images of the base location which is hidden beneath millions of tons of rock on the South China Sea island of Hainan.

Rise of Nationalism Frays Global Ties

Posted by Matt in April 28th, 2008 | no comment Edit

In a globalization manifesto, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman declared that the Internet and other planet-spanning technologies were erasing national boundaries. The world, he said in a 2005 best seller, was flat.

No longer. The global economy appears to be entering an epoch in which governments are reasserting their role in the lives of individuals and businesses. Once again, barriers are rising. Call it the new nationalism.

“The era of easy globalization is certainly over,” says Pulitzer Prize-winning author Daniel Yergin, whose 1998 book, “The Commanding Heights,” detailed the triumph of markets over nations, starting with British deregulation under Margaret Thatcher. “The power of the state is reasserting itself.”

Rearming the world

Why nations are suddenly locked in an arms race unseen since the early days of the Cold War

But the exercise highlighted an alarming new reality. With much less fanfare than the early days of the Cold War, the world is entering a new arms race, and with it, a dangerous new web of military relationships. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, which tracks international armed forces spending, between 1997 and 2006 global military expenditures jumped by nearly 40 percent. Driven mainly by anxiety over oil and natural resources, countries are building their arsenals of conventional weapons at a rate not seen in decades, beefing up their armies and navies, and forging potential new alliances that could divide up the world in unpredictable ways.

“The pace and scope of China’s military expansion are startling,” says John Tkacik, a China analyst at the Heritage Foundation, a think tank in Washington.

Connecting the Dots

Check out this article titled Russia’s Nuclear Threat. Here we learn that Russia’s policy is that it reserves the right to use nuclear weapons preemptively to protect itself and its allies (watch video.) Fair enough, but which countries are its allies? For starters, Syria is one of its allies.

Is Syria an ally of Russia? Check out this article: Russia to defend its principal Middle East ally: Moscow takes Syria under its protection.

What would be Russia’s reaction if at some point in the future Israel destroys Syria with nuclear weapons? Israel just might use nuclear weapons against Syria if it uses chemical weapons against Israeli cities. This article discusses just how close Israel is to a Syrian chemical weapon attack. Although, the article doesn’t forecast Israel’s use of nuclear weapons against this type of attack.

Here’s another article discussing the next Israeli war with its neighbors: Iranian, Syrian missiles to pound Israel in next war. This is all very scary.

Israel readies largest exercise ever to prepare for Iran-Syria missile war
