Negotiating with China is “worse than the IMF,” Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa said Saturday after rejecting China’s conditions for a 1.7-billion-dollar loan to build a hydroelectric plant.
In his weekly report on government activities, Correa said some of the conditions China’s Eximbank required for the loan were “really a threat against our sovereignty.”

Venezuela has called the military pact a threat to its security and embarked on an extensive military procurement program to put the country on a war footing. President Hugo Chavez has also found support in Bolivia and Ecuador for his rhetoric, including warnings of “winds of war” blowing from the north following the Colombian-U.S. deal.

Leftist leaders from Venezuela and Ecuador thundered against a US military presence in Latin America on Monday, warning the “winds of war” were blowing across the increasingly polarized continent.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez led the charge, attacking Colombia’s decision to host American forces at seven of its bases, a move also condemned by Chavez’s Ecuadoran counterpart [...]

And many of his [Lula's] constituents are unhappy with the visit by a conservative, homophobic, anti-Semitic theocrat. Somehow that seems to clash with the values of tolerance, freedom and progress that Brazil prides itself on. Following protests in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo last week, Lula apparently pulled the plug.
So, the entourage of more [...]
