At first sight, the 115-mile pipeline is a modest enough undertaking. Initially it will carry 8 billion cubic meters of gas from Turkmenistan to Iran.
But analysts see this as the precursor of major shifts in energy production and distribution involving Russia, China, Iran, Central Asia and the European Union.

Russia has all but lost its title as the world’s biggest producer of natural gas to the United States, and Moscow appears unlikely to reclaim the No. 1 spot until Gazprom manages to capture new foreign markets.
Gas output dropped 12 percent to 582 billion cubic meters last year as demand in the key market, the [...]

While America has been absorbed by the Afghan election imbroglio, a less-noticed event slid into place in the Middle East. It is less dramatic than President Hamid Karzai’s near removal; but this event tilts the strategic balance: Turkey finally shrugged off its United States straight-jacket; stared past any beckoning European Union membership; and has fixed [...]

Medvedev called the United States, European Union, and Russia the “three branches of European civilization.” But Western countries have largely ignored his proposals so far. Analysts say the Kremlin proposal is unrealistic and chiefly aimed at boosting Moscow’s role in international affairs by undermining NATO and the OSCE.

Why does this have to vex anyone? If you had been paying attention then you could see this coming a mile away. It was just a matter of time. Turkey is rejecting the West.
With Turkey’s prospects for joining the European Union growing more elusive and the country reaching out to predominantly Muslim countries with a [...]

The European Union is becoming ever stronger, and no one seems to care.
On Oct. 2, one of the year’s most important stories passed by with little notice in the United States: Irish voters supported ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon in a referendum that cleared the last major obstacle to a substantial overhaul of European [...]

With an ambitious new pipeline planned to run along the bed of the Baltic Sea, the Russian natural gas giant Gazprom is driving a political wedge between Eastern and Western Europe.
While the Russian-German pipeline offers clear energy benefits to Western Europe, Central and Eastern European leaders fear it could lead to a new era of [...]

A survey by a British newspaper has found that due to the rise in the levels of immigration from Muslim countries and low birth rates among Europe’s indigenous population, a fifth of the European Union (EU) would have Muslim populations by 2050.
Last year, five per cent of the total population of 27 EU countries was [...]
