For months, Russian officials have been negotiating with France over the purchase of a Mistral-class amphibious assault ship, at an estimated cost of $750 million, and a license to build several more in Russia. The high-tech ship would stand out in Russia’s aging fleet. Vladimir S. Vysotsky, commander of the Russian Navy, noted this fall [...]

A top Russian diplomat suggested Thursday that the U.S. should not talk with non-NATO nations about a prospective missile shield, Russian news agencies reported.
Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov’s remarks appeared to reflect alarm over the idea that Western-leaning neighbors such as Ukraine or Georgia, Russia’s foe in a war last year, could potentially host U.S. [...]

Russia’s navy chief said on Friday that a Mistral-class warship the military wants to buy from France would have helped it fight its five-day war against Georgia last year.
The top brass say they want to buy the 21,300-tonne helicopter carrier from France after the conflict exposed Russia’s military hardware as largely outdated.

The sharp increase in tension between Georgia and Russia and the deployment of the Akula nuclear submarines close to the U.S. mainland might not be coincidental. Moscow sees the confrontation with Georgia as a proxy standoff with the U.S. and NATO. In September 2008 after the August war, the Russian military staged major strategic exercises [...]
