AT MORE than a dozen “missile alert facilities’’ in caverns below the exquisite landscape of the northern Rockies, teams of young men and women spend 24-hour shifts in steel-and-concrete bunkers. They are highly disciplined military officers, but they are also prisoners to the past, condemned to carry out an earth-shattering mission that makes absolutely no [...]

How might the United States ratchet up pressure on foreign enemies and threats, wherever they are on the globe, while reducing the need to station warships, planes, and troops within striking distance? A new type of weapon might do the trick–and even facilitate President Barack Obama’s efforts to reduce the U.S. arsenal of nuclear warheads, [...]

In the summer of 1962, the leader of the great Soviet empire, Nikita Khrushchev, faced a serious problem. His huge intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) didn’t work. Their launchers were unreliable, their aim was off and the fuel used to rocket them skyward was so volatile that they had to be stored empty. In case of [...]

Were you wondering what China was doing with all profits it made from selling toys to the U.S.? It was busy developing missiles with nuclear warheads and pointing them at U.S. cities.
As an added bonus, it is likely the nuclear warheads are based on U.S. designs. The designs for our top warheads were stolen by [...]

“Estimates gathered by Jane’s Intelligence Review show that within 10 years China may have a much larger total missile force, although not as large as Russia or the U.S., and it will utilize a range of modern technologies to ensure the effective retaliatory purpose of China’s long-range nuclear missile forces,” Jane’s editor Christian Le Miere [...]

Iran remains committed to developing a long-range ICBM that can extend Tehran’s military reach to Europe and the United States. The Middle East, Europe and even the Eastern Seaboard of the United States may find themselves within range of Iranian nuclear missiles in the next three to five years or less.
Even in case of a [...]

A review of Indian and Pakistani weapons of mass destruction and delivery systems shows just how scary the Indian subcontinent is at this present time.
“Pakistan uses both highly enriched uranium and plutonium for its nuclear weapons. The Khushab nuclear site has sufficient plutonium production for 40 to 50 warheads a year by itself. This site [...]

Military experts said the planned new arsenal was presumed to consist of land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) rather than submarine-launched missiles. If this is the case, the plans represent a fourfold increase in the rate of ICBM deployment. The arsenal will include a new-generation, multiple-warhead ICBM called the RS-24. It was first test-fired in 2007, [...]

Indeed, by 2020 the Soviet nuclear strategic potential inherited in 1991 will be mostly spent. All Soviet-made, silo-based, heavy SS-18 intercontinental ballistic missiles and land-based mobile SS-25 (Topol) ICBMs will be retired, as well as the six Delta III strategic nuclear submarines. The fleet of six Delta IV strategic submarines is planned to continue in [...]
