China and South Korea are expanding their submarine fleets as the U.S. Navy shrinks its own. The conservative Heritage Foundation in a report last Tuesday said that by 2025 the number of U.S. submarines in the Pacific Ocean will fall from 30 to 27 while China will have 78 submarines and South Korea 26.

The deal, which officials said could be ready to sign in two months, would cut each side’s nuclear arsenal to between 1,500 and 1,675 operationally deployed warheads — down from 2,200 on the American side and 2,800 in Russia, which has also kept an unknown number in reserve.
Both countries would also commit to deeper cuts [...]

However, the op-ed is faulty on a number of serious nuclear policy matters, four of which deserve consideration:
(1) The reductions in deployed nuclear weapons to 1,500-1,675, as are being contemplated in a new treaty between the U.S. and Russia, are welcome but largely beside the point;

(2) The implied parallel reductions in nuclear capable delivery [...]

The unsuccessful Bulava missile test calls into question the entire development strategy Russia has chosen for its strategic nuclear forces. At present the Russian Navy plans to introduce eight Project 955 submarines armed with 16 R-30 Bulava ballistic missiles for strategic nuclear purposes in the next 10 to 12 years. The failed missile test calls [...]

With new anti-missile systems and submarines that can carry nuclear weapons, Israel is readying a new generation of armaments designed to defend itself against distant Iran as well as Iranian-backed militias on its borders.
Having failed to crush Hamas’ firepower in its Gaza offensive last winter, or Hezbollah’s in its 2006 war in Lebanon, Israel is [...]

Radical Steps toward ‘Minimal Nuclear Deterrence’ Continue to Undermine American Security

First is the idea that reducing our deterrent force to no more than 500 warheads, (from the current level of roughly 2,200) is somehow a good idea. There is no discussion, only assertions that such a force is adequate to provide deterrence not only for the U.S. but for our numerous allies that rely upon [...]

Nuclear Weapons – More At Stake than Just ‘Reduction’ (Part One of Two)

Reports are that one-third of our 450 land-based missiles may be eliminated under some plans being considered. Given that our submarine and bomber bases number only four, and submarines at sea also number four, we are essentially making it dramatically easier for an enemy to strike at America’s nuclear forces in a crisis. Remember, today [...]

If you are from Britain then you had better start thinking about leaving the country. It’s clear that insanity or stupidity is starting to reign.
Ditto for America. The stupidity disease is spreading here too.
And now? The Lib Dems are flirting with disarmament. There are many in the Tory and Labour parties who seem to doubt [...]
