India aims to test a new nuclear-capable missile with a 5000-km (3,100-mile) range, a top military scientist said on Wednesday, a move that could complicate security in a volatile region.
The missile would effectively bring most of China within India’s range, as well as more potential targets to the west and east than its existing weaponry.

India’s current arsenal of missiles is largely intended for confronting archrival Pakistan. The Agni III, in contrast, is India’s longest-range missile, designed to reach 3,000 kilometers (1,900 miles) – putting China’s major cities well into range, as well as Middle Eastern targets.

Coyle says he was ‘impressed’ when he read details of the Chinese test. Military analyst John Pike, from the think tank Globalsecurity.org in Alexandria, Virginia, was not. He says the tests were all about ‘bragging rights.’ ‘Anything the Americans can do,the “Chicoms” can do better,’ Pike imagined Chinese officials thinking.
Swaine appears to concur. ‘The test [...]

AT MORE than a dozen “missile alert facilities’’ in caverns below the exquisite landscape of the northern Rockies, teams of young men and women spend 24-hour shifts in steel-and-concrete bunkers. They are highly disciplined military officers, but they are also prisoners to the past, condemned to carry out an earth-shattering mission that makes absolutely no [...]

When Illyas Musayev heard that the Neva Express train had been bombed on Nov. 27, killing 26 well-to-do Russians and injuring about 100 others, the Chechen separatist was incredulous. He didn’t want to believe that his former comrade in arms Doku Umarov had kept the pledge he made in August to bring his holy war [...]

China has a strategic advantage in that its border lies along the flat Tibetan plateau. This affords China the upper hand in case of a military emergency as it can reinforce its units there quickly. The Middle Kingdom is constructing an extensive network of roads, railways, airfields, pipelines and bases which may point to offensive [...]
