In fact, some analysts argue that fresh protests could break out as early as this weekend, when the Olympic torch relay passes through the Tibetan capital Lhasa, a route some protesters have claimed was a deliberate provocation. In an apparent concession, Beijing shortened the time that the torch would be present in Tibet but refused [...]

Is there any end to Chinese ambitions in Asia? China wishes to dominate Asia with blockades, blockages, military diplomacy and political Machiavellism.
China’s building of the port of Gwadar at the mouth of the Persian Gulf in fact is meant to blockade the oil supplies of the world. Its military diplomacy is on display at the [...]

China as an “emerging superpower” makes for a compelling story line in the media. It is reinforced by the propaganda image that the current Chinese leadership would like us to accept. But the reality is quite different. Although recent events in Tibet and western China – and the central government’s response – appear to be [...]

The fiasco of the Olympic torch relay has focused attention on human rights in China. What is the source of human rights abuses in that country today?
Many people assume the problem is that China remains a communist dictatorship and that abuses occur because a strong, centralized state ignores the rights of its citizens. With regard [...]

Like all other foreign journalists in China, I get my share of criticism from Chinese readers, mostly about my stories on TIME’s website or my posts on our China Blog. Some of the criticism can be pretty sharp–that comes with the territory. But the opprobrium has taken on a distinctly unpleasant edge in recent weeks [...]

In recent years, China has voted in favor of several U.N. Security Council sanctions against Iran. But, working with Russia, Beijing has blocked more expansive sanctions that might have proved effective, arguing that they were not convinced Iran was pursuing nuclear weapons.
But then earlier this month, Iran announced that it is tripling the number [...]

According to the CIA, China has transferred one third of its nuclear arsenal to Nagchuka, 250 kms away from Lhasa, a region full of huge caves, which the Chinese have linked together by an intricate underground network and installed nearly 100 intercontinental ballistic missiles, many of them pointed at Indian cities.
The reason for this is [...]

China is an island. We do not mean it is surrounded by water; we mean China is surrounded by territory that is difficult to traverse. Therefore, China is hard to invade; given its size and population, it is even harder to occupy. This also makes it hard for the Chinese to invade others; not utterly [...]

One accusation leveled by the Indian Left against the US is that in a unipolar world, the US is trying to be the global Policeman. Be that as it may, a question to be posed to the Left is: Is China usurping the role as Asia’s Policeman?

The Chinese military establishment has gone on an overdrive with its anti-Indian rhetoric, calling it “arrogant” and warning it to stay away from a “path of confrontation”.
According to a Chinese defence think-tank, recent military exercises and re-positioning of troops in north Bengal was a kick-start reaction by “an arrogant” India.

The long-suffering Tibetans have been in the news. This happens perhaps once or twice a decade.
